Article: http://www.marketingweek.co.uk/opinion/why-bother-with-product-placement?/3010438.article
The author of this UK article, Jo Roberts, questions the effectiveness of product placement by asking a consumer reaching for a name brand product in a store was influenced by subtle advertising or not. She points out instances where movies have awkwardly overused product placement. In the end, she states that advertisers have a long way to go if they plan to increase sales by use of product placement, so I believe she has a negative or indifferent stance on product placement as a whole.
I believe that product placement is, to some degree, effective on a subconscious level. For instance, if I watch an ad for a specific brand right before I go to the store I feel I am more likely to consider buying it. However, that could be because I am a compulsive shopper..
I also feel that product placement is somewhat effective on others. Nonchalant product placement makes the product seem like the "normal" thing to be using. However, if a person reports not noticing the products placed in a film, television show, or video game, their effectiveness is again questioned.

The author thinks Subway product placement on Hawaii Five-0 was "particularly egregious — the most jarring, disruptive and insulting example" he has seen.
I agree with the author that this product placement barely had anything to do with the storyline of the show, but I do not think the product placement was that bad.
I feel this product placement is effective on me,because,no matter how unobservant I am,this is explicit enough to notice the product,Subway. In addition,I have no malice about being exposed to any types of advertisements,so it is effective enough to me.
On the other hand,I have a feeling that this product placement might not be effective on others, because I believe there are many people who are already tired of "ad floods." To this kind of people, this way-too-obvious product placement can be annoying and even make audience go against that specific brand or product.

ReplyDeleteBush stated at the time that this was the end to major combat operations in Iraq. While this statement did coincide with an end to the war.The vast majority of casualties, both military and civilian, have occurred since the speech.

I used President Obama's hope sign as example because it was used to engage his audience in believing in him. Since he has been in office showing this sign now would be very controversial. The intended meaning was to instill the American people with expectation and excitement for a new beginning. A lot of Americans it has been more of the same or worse since he has been President. This sign was used during his campaign for President.

Article:http://dewanemutunga.com/blog/2010/04/11/proscons-how-effective-is-product-placement/
The author's stance is that product placement is effective in the right context. An example they used was that if a cigarette company tried to advertise on let's say Hannah Montana, it would be counterproductive, but in a context where it fits, what they term organic synergy, product placement can be very effective.
I think product placement can and is effective, and have very similar thoughts to the author of that article. For me personally, I don't cognitively feel that product placement affects what I buy, but that's the purpose of product placement. It isn't such straightforward advertising and it's meant to go under the radar. I feel like product placement is hit and miss with most people, but it is put in such situations that for as many people that aren't affected, enough are to increase sales. The article sites many things from the 90's, such as the increase in sales of the "Bill Cosby" sweaters from the Cosby show, the increase in sales of Michael Jordan shoes on Fresh Prince, and the DeLorean from Back to the Future. Whether people think it is effective or not, the numbers say that it is.
