Journal Entry #5: State of Cool
For this journal entry, provide a definition of cool. Base your definition on your own thoughts as well on 2-3 definitions you find on the Internet. Next, provide a link to an advertisement (image or video) that you feel fits this definition of cool (Exception-you cannot use Apple products or Mountain Dew). Finally, provide an explanation of how your ad fits your definition. Be clear with your explanation to show how specific elements of the ad tie to the definition.

Cool is something urban,unique,attractive,awesome,cutting-edge or hilariously funny. Anything cool magnetically draws people's attention,so a majority of people look up to it. I think everyone wants to be cool in a sense, because being cool has to do with being different from anyone or anything else. However,it needs some courage to be cool, because, for many people, cool is often "odd" at first sight. Cool can also be considered as something that follows the trend which is already dominant or prevailing.

This advertisement fits my definition of being cool in terms of drawing people's attention as well as being unique and hilariously funny. Background music,"Sexy And I Know It" by LMFAO,also helps make this advertisement cool, because it is(or used to be) popular, prevalent and trendy.
I see cool in two senses. First, cool is adhering to the mainstream ideas, fashion, social views of the time. This is a more consumer-driven idea of cool. The second sense of cool is something trend-setting and undeterred by the opinions of others. People who fall into the second category of cool are unafraid to mix and match styles, patters, and concepts. They are often the ones who influence mainstream culture. As discussed in class, when corporate fashion designers realize how these people are dressing, they mimic the style and sell it in stores. This forces the people setting the trends to start the process over and find new styles.

This image of an American Apparel ad fits my definition of cool because the model is wearing seemingly contradictory items of clothing. If the weather is cold enough for a sweater, you usually wouldn't be wearing shorts. Along with the thigh high socks and sneakers, this brand is clearly unafraid of mixing and matching styles.
Cool is a popular trend. It is a product of culture that is ever changing. Its also a unique opinion that catches on and becomes a the elite norm.
ReplyDeleteUrban dictionary says that cool is "1. awesome
2. popular; like in a social hierarchy
3. used when a conversation goes silent"
The Online Slang Dictionary says cool is "very good, excellent, interesting, fun, etc"
An example of a "cool ad" is the Dr. Pepper 10 commercial

This shows an example of what men are supposed to think is cool in a specifically manly sense. This ad shows cool stunts from an action movie to convey the message that Dr. Pepper 10 is a cool diet drink for men.
Cool is anything that is new, fresh, exclusive and matchless.
ReplyDeleteEncarta Dictionary- " Fashionable and sophisticated"
Oxford- "Calm and confident in a way that lacks respect for other people, but makes people admire you as well as disapprove".

My example shows how Gatorade used someone everyone in the sports world can identify, but made it so you can identify with his progress as player. This commercial was one of kind and we had never seen something this creative before. This is matchless because it gives viewers the chance to imagine what it would be like if Jordan played himself at his prime.
