Journal Entry #8: Intertextuality
For this entry, describe your understanding of Intertextuality. Second, provide three examples from Shrek 2 clearly describing the scene from the movie and it's intertextual reference. Do not duplicate one another's entries.
To me,intertextuality seems like parody,but more specifically,parody in different forms of genres. Thinking of intertextuality,I also found appropriation similar to intertextuality,because the common ground for both intertextuality and appropriation is the concept of borrowing.
1.One of the honeymoon scenes where Fiona wiped off the mud on Shrek's face and kissed him upside down-This is from Spider-Man. 2.The "Far Far Away" sign-This resembles Hollywood sign. 3.The scene where the fairy godmother appeared to Fiona for the first time and practiced magic,and Fiona's dress changed and was blown up,Fiona held down her dress-This refers to one of the most famous scenes of Marilyn Monroe. Also,in this scene,there were moving furniture,which reminded me of "Beauty and the Beast" from Disney.
In my opinion, intertexuality is when one media makes a reference to another by image, quote, or movie. Parody is a form of intertexuality.
In Shrek 2 there are tons of examples of intertextuality: 1. During Shrek and Fiona's wedding ceremony the wedding bands are formed and presented like the rings in the movie "Lord of the Rings". 2. Donkey tells Shrek to nueter Puss in boots while he says like Bob Barker would do. 3. When the fairy tale creatures bust Sherk, Donkey, and Puss out of the dungeon the music playing is the theme from the movie, "Mission Impossible".
To me intertextuality is way to reference or show correlation to an image, sound or video.
My examples of in Shrek 2 of intertextuality are.. 1. When donkey sings apart from the movie "Little Orphan Annie" 2. When puss boots carves a P into the tree refereeing Zoro. 3.Willy Wonka when the enter the factory and see little people working.
Intertextuality is when one media borrows from another whether it be through quotes, pictures, videos, etc. The borrower then changes the original concept enough to make it their own.
1. In Princess Fiona's room there is a poster of "Sir Justin" taped to her ceiling. This is a reference to Justin Timberlake. 2. The gingerbread man, mice and Pinocchio are watching television and one character says that he would rather be watching "Wheel of Torture." This is a play on the game show "Wheel of Fortune." 3. After Shrek transforms from an ogre to a human, one of the maidens offered to fetch him a pail of water. Her name was Jill, from the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill.
Intertextuality is when one media type appropriates something from a different media type. This is like a parody, but it's not always in a fun-making way. It can be done through video, audio, text, or any other medium. The new media type can then use this reference in the way of their choice.
1) A personal favorite of mine is the shot when they drop the wedding ring. It is very reminiscent of Lord of the Rings. 2)Another good one is the "pepper spray" that they use in their version of the show "Cops" called "Knights" 3)When Mundo storms the castle, he makes a Godzilla screech/rawr noise straight from the movie Godzilla
